Xiaomi Mi 5 vs OnePlus 3 comparison: design and build quality

Depending on your needs, the Xiaomi Mi 5 arrives in three forms, consisting of the Standard Edition, the High Edition and the Special Edition.

The most expensive version of Xiaomi’s Mi 5 smartphone comes with a glossy ceramic back cover, said to be ‘harder than steel’ according to the gadget’s makers. Elsewhere, the other builds of the smartphone feature a curved glass rear, which can be picked up in white, gold or black.

Whilst the Xiaomi Mi 5 doesn’t boast the most unique shape in the smartphone world, it’s hard to deny that the Mi 5 is a great, sleek-looking mobile. The almost-bezeless display is one of our favorite aspects of the smartphone, and the fingerprint sensor hidden inside the home button unlocks the mobile brilliantly quickly.

Meanwhile, the OnePlus 3 is yet to be seen in any official capacity, although there’s plenty of rumors and whispers to sink our teeth into.

For starters, the upcoming smartphone from the Chinese group is expected to arrive ‘at the end of the second quarter of 2016’, and as the date of the unveiling draws nearer we’ll undoubtedly see more information on the gadget leak out.

Images arriving towards the end of 2015 imply that OnePlus may be steering away from a textured rear for the OnePlus 3, instead favoring a brushed steel finish that gives the smartphone a flatter feel. Whilst some OnePlus fans will be sad to see the unique back plate disappear, others will be pleased that OnePlus has chosen a more resilient material to protect its release.

If the ‘leaked’ images of the supposed OnePlus 3 are anything to go by, OnePlus has decided to reposition the rear camera since it featured on the OnePlus 2. The pictures arriving courtesy of Mobile-Dad show the camera to be near the top of the body, proving far more typical of a modern mobile.

One major talking point surrounding the OnePlus 3 concerns the method of unlocking it. Whether or not OnePlus will keep its fingerprint technology remains to be seen, although some rumors point to the smartphone being unlocked via iris-recognition. Perhaps this is one of the harder-to-believe theories surrounding the OnePlus 3, but it’s an interesting thought nonetheless.

Xiaomi Mi 5 vs OnePlus 3 comparison: display

The display of the Xiaomi Mi 5 performs very well, treating buyers to great brightness levels and rich color detail that keeps pictures, videos and games looking impressive.

A 5.15-inch full HD LCD unit sits on the front face of all three versions of the Mi 5, each flaunting a gorgeous edge-to-edge look that helps give the smartphone a premium look. Whilst you could argue that the Xiaomi Mi 5’s design is a little simple, the Chinese group has still managed to craft a product that looks fantastic in the hand.

A sheet of Gorilla Glass 4 protects the front of the smartphone, keeping the 1,080 x 1,920 display nice and safe.

An intriguing AnTuTu Benchmark screenshot putting the ‘OnePlus A3000’ in the spotlight suggests that the OnePlus 3 will sport a 1,920 x 1,080 display, which would give it the same screen specs as the OnePlus 2. As we pointed out in our full review of the OnePlus 2, the previous entry into the series didn’t really wow when it came to its display, however.

Although the screen of the OnePlus 2 was acceptable, it didn’t offer the same quality as other flagship devices at the time. Our fingers are crossed that OnePlus can take things a step further with the OnePlus 3.

As we mentioned earlier, there’s suggestions that the display of the OnePlus 3 will showcase some impressive unlock functionality. One such rumor mentions an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor embedded below the device’s display. Would this help the OnePlus 3 on its way to becoming the new ‘Flagship Killer’?

Xiaomi Mi 5 vs OnePlus 3 comparison: processor and storage

Each of the three Mi 5’s are powered by the capable Snapdragon 820 chip, although the most costly model comes with 4 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal storage, which is more than enough for heavy smartphone users.

Meanwhile, the middle of the range model has 3 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage, whilst the entry model is equipped with 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of storage. It’s nice to see that a 16 GB entry model is nowhere to be seen, considering that amount of space won’t get you far these days.

The same ‘OnePlus 3′ benchmark screenshot touching upon display also mentions that the device will arrive with 4 GB of RAM, which would match the specs of the OnePlus 2.

Apparently, OnePlus’ highly anticipated smartphone will also feature 32 GB of internal storage for buyers to play around with, although it’s also likely that another model will be unveiled offering more space to fill up. MicroSD support would be very welcome, but it’s worth remembering that the OnePlus 2 didn’t feature expandable storage.

Powering the OnePlus 3 will be a Snapdragon 820 64-bit processor, we hear, backed by an Adreno 530 GPU to keep graphics slick.

Xiaomi Mi 5 vs OnePlus 3 comparison: camera

The main 16 MP camera of the Xiaomi Mi 5 is a Sony-designed IMX298, which works hand in hand with Xiaomi’s OIS technology to provide great support for shooting in low light and for capturing fast-moving objects.

On the front of the Xiaomi Mi 5 is a 4 MP snapper with an f / 2.0 aperture lens, capable of wide-angle selfies that will keep Snapchat addicts happy.

In our review of the Xiaomi Mi 5, we found the smartphone’s pair of cameras to be good performers rather than great ones. Even so, the user experience is solid enough to satisfy most folk that enjoy playing around with mobile cameras.

Concrete information on the OnePlus 3’s cameras is hard to come by, but we’ve spotted suggestions that the new OnePlus smartphone will dominate the OnePlus 2 when it comes to taking pictures and videos.

AnTuTu lists the OnePlus 3 with a 16 MP rear camera and an 8 MP front-facing shooter, which, if true, would see the OnePlus 3 take some great steps forward compared to the OnePlus gadgets before it. A rear camera of 16 MP would provide the best experience ever on a OnePlus device, so it’ll be interesting to see just what happens.

Xiaomi Mi 5 vs OnePlus 3 comparison: software

MIUI 7 is the OS of choice for the Xiaomi Mi 5, based on Android 6.0 Marshmallow. As MIUI has over 175 million active users, updates for the smartphone are served up on a regular basis, each providing substantial improvements that keep the smartphone running nicely.

If you’re a fan of customization, the perks of MIUI 7 should put a smile on your face. Unlike many other UIs, installing a new application to the Xiaomi Mi 5 will see the download appear on the home page rather than anywhere else. This is because the smartphone doesn’t feature an app drawer, although in saying that apps can still be grouped into folders.

The OnePlus 3 will obviously come equipped with OnePlus’ Oxygen OS, complimented by Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow. As Oxygen OS gets older, the general user experience continues to improve, and the clean, stock-like feel of the skin ensures that it looks the real deal when partnered with Marshmallow.

Xiaomi Mi 5 vs OnePlus 3 comparison: battery

The Xiaomi Mi 5 will likely last you the whole day comfortably and can be ready for full day’s use after just one hour of charging, which is fantastic news for those that are constantly on the move.

A Type-C connector helps power the Xiaomi Mi 5 and the smartphone’s 3,000 mAh battery performs well overall. During our time with the Mi 5 in our full review we were suitably impressed by performance, also pleased to see Quick Charge 3.0 on board to sweeten the experience.

There’s no news on the capacity of the battery to be featured inside the OnePlus 3, although for context the OnePlus 2 arrived with a 3,300 mAh battery.

In our experience, the battery tucked inside the OnePlus 2 is a great all-round performer, easily coping with a day of heavy usage. Android’s own Battery Saver feature helps keep the smartphone powered up for even longer, too.
