Sony Xperia Z5 release date, price, specs and rumors

Sony’s Xperia Z5 is expected to launch at IFA 2015 in early September. Where the Xperia Z3+ was a little disappointing, rumors suggest that the Xperia Z5 could be one of the strongest devices of the year. Here’s what we know about the Sony Xperia Z5 release date, price, specs and rumors right now.

Sony Xperia Z5 Design

Xperia Blog has leaked three supposed press shots of the Xperia Z5, which show the device in gold, white, and turquoise. One of the images suggests the device will be waterproof (as its predecessors) and another seemingly confirms the implementation of the 1/2.3-inch 23 MP Exmor RS camera. Check them out throughout this page.

The last image leak (seen below) arrived from @vizileaks on Twitter and contained a number of clues about the upcoming device. Ignore the phone in the middle — that’s an iPhone 6 to give an indication of size — and you’re apparently looking at the Xperia Z5 and Compact.

The power button is now oval instead of circular, and there’s a fingerprint reader somewhere: the screens of both devices show fingerprint scanning in progress, but it’s not clear where the actual reader is located. Previous rumors suggested that the Z5 would contain Qualcomm’s Sense ID Ultrasonic Finger Scanner, and this latest leak suggests that those rumors were correct.

Sony Xperia Z5 specs

A fresh leak picked up by @evleaks and gleaned from Sony Georgia’s Facebook page has revealed a bunch of new info about the upcoming Sony Xperia devices.

It looks as though Xperia Z5 will arrive at IFA 2015 as suspected, and could house a 5.2-inch Full-HD display. The camera will reportedly come in at 23 MP with an F1.8-inch aperture and 1/2.2-inch sensor. It also seems that the Z5 will arrive with a fingerprint scanner, as an earlier photo (the second of the two below) had indicated.

Previous speculation that the Xperia Z5 would include the Snapdragon 820, 4 GB of RAM, a new 21 MP Sony camera (Exmor RS IMX230) and 4,500 mAh battery seems to be way off the mark now, but don’t worry if the Xperia Z5 isn’t a total specs beast – the Xperia Z5 Premium, with its 5.5-inch 4K display, might be.

We’ll hopefully have full details on all the Sony Xperia devices this time next week. Stay tuned.

Sony Xperia Z5 release date

Remember a few months back when all that Sony Pictures email hacking was going on? Those emails mentioned a "May device" and a "November device". The Xperia Z3+ is obviously the first, and it looks increasingly as though the Xperia Z5 will be second.

Phone Arena is currently running with a story sourced from a site called Technodify that claims the Xperia Z5 Ultra, Xperia Z5 Compact and Xperia Z5 launch are all slated for early September at IFA (September 4-9, 2015), so the eventual Xperia Z5 release date could very well be November. We can’t confirm the accuracy of this information but it is certainly feasible.

Sony Xperia Z5 price

The Xperia Z5 price is anybody’s guess, but the seriously beefed up specs sheet – if it can be believed – posits this as the true successor to the Xperia Z3, which was a bit of a weak successor to the Xperia Z2. A radical shift is well overdue in the Xperia lineup, so we hope the Z5 is the Xperia we’ve been waiting for.
