FIFA Mobile Football: for football fans

How could we not put the mobile version of FIFA, EA’s 2017 version of its football game, in our selection? FIFA Mobile Football is certainly one of the best football games on Android at the moment. The 2017 version brings some interesting new features such as better AI, better graphics and an all new game play. Funny thing this year, players are more emotional and more sensitive to events during the game. The game makers have also paid particular attention to the evolution of the teams, given that the content is updated daily to match changes in reality.

Ultimately, another interesting element for Electronic Arts is that the game has been totally redesigned exclusively for mobile, with a download size of less than 100 MB. One of the disadvantages is that this app requires a permanent Internet connection, and each player is strongly encouraged to spend money. Another disadvantage is that we often come across players with a team that is significantly stronger than your own, and not against players matching your level.

Of course, there isn’t just football in the Play Store. Basketball fans also have their mobile version of NBA 2K17 with MyNBA2K17. Just like EA’s FIFA Mobile Football, don’t expect to find the same gaming experience as on a console, however the experience is still pretty good, provided you have a smartphone powerful enough to make the most of this game’s graphics (otherwise, say hello to glitches).

Overall, MyNBA2K17 is definitely the best basketball game on Android, but the game leaves somewhat of an unfinished feeling. EA could have made a bigger effort, particularly regarding the smoothness of the experience, and getting rid of glitches that ruin the overall experience.

TETRIS: for fans of puzzle games

At the heart of games that were part of many people’s childhoods, we definitely have to mention the one and only TETRIS. Quite a success from the very start, the ported version from console to Android is pretty good, but slightly off from the original. The game is indeed for mobile, but this one has additional features that were not present in the original.

In terms of how comfortable it is in hand, it’s rather smooth and pleasant. The graphics are obviously limited, but you can see efforts have been made, when compared to the Game Boy version. The new modes are enjoyable, and the game doesn’t suffer from any particular glitches or lag. To conclude, the only thing that taints the gaming experience is the presence of advertisements in each part of the game.

Sonic The Hedgehog: the arcade in all its splendor

Should we even bother introducing Sonic, the most popular character in the entire SEGA universe? It’s available now for free on Android, and it hasn’t come alone, as 4 other SEGA apps have also become available on the Play Store. You’ll find more information on the subject in this article.

For those who don’t know Sonic, he’s a blue hedgehog (yes, blue) that you have to move forward and jump with, when necessary. He can go very fast, so it’s better to stay focused! Even though it’s free, it’s not free of advertisements, and the only way to get rid of it is to opt for the paid version (which costs $2). Anyway, you’ll find it a real pleasure to discover this amusing universe full of pitfalls, where you play a blue hedgehog jumping from level to level.

Crazy Taxi: the crazy taxi driver is back

Among the other games that have left a bit of an impression on me, I have a vague but rather fond memory of Crazy Taxi from Dreamcast. What I loved most was obviously bombing it down the hills like a madman, dodging the cars with crazy music from the band Offspring.

Having replayed it recently, I can say that the handling and smoothness takes me back down memory lane, and good news, Crazy Taxi is (since recently) available for free.

  • App version: 2.0

Baldur’s Gate Enhanced Edition: RPG

Dungeons and Dragons was also an integral part of my childhood… and I can tell you, I’m not disappointed. On the contrary, Baldur’s Gate is like one of those great vintage games inspired by that medieval-fantastic universe, that leaves a lasting impression on you.

Although they’re available on Android smartphones, it’s recommended to use a tablet to fully enjoy it. I’d also advise you to play with a device powerful enough to avoid any glitches or crashes. The only small disappointment is that there’s no backup available via Google. As for the rest, it’s all good!

Grand Theft Auto: the best open-world game

Long awaited on the mobile platform, the famous Grand Theft Auto franchise finally joined Android (and iOS). Rockstar Games offers several licenses on Google Play. Among them, you can find:

In terms of the handling in the game, it’s clear that it’s far from the PC and console versions, but it’s still fairly decent for mobile. The graphics are also very good for an open-world game, let’s not forget. If you want to play them, you’ll have to pay about $4 to $5 for each of them. If you want to get an idea before purchasing, here’s the trailer for Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas on Android:

Get these on the Play Store: GTA: III, GTA: Vice City, GTA: San Andreas, GTA: Chinatown Wars and Grand Theft Auto: ViceCity.

The best action/adventure games ported from PC/console

Max Payne Mobile: action and scores to settle

Available since 2013 on mobile platform, the ported version from PC/console to Android is described as excellent by purists of the genre, despite its old age. In gameplay, the smoothness is truly like the original, even on a high-end mobile from 2014-2015. In addition, the graphics have been remastered to HD quality for a better picture. It’s even possible to configure the controls and/or synchronize some external controllers.

Unfortunately, you have to pay for Max Payne Mobile ($2), but it’s the only price you’ll have to pay to enjoy this great game. It’s worth noting that the game is sometimes on discount, so keep an eye out for any reductions in the Play Store.

  • App version: 1.2
  • App size: 1.36 GB
  • App compatibility: Android 2.3 or higher
  • Pricing: paid

Tomb Raider: the infamous Lara Croft

At times like this, when more suitable versions (like Lara Croft: Relic Run and Lara Croft Go) exist, it’s worth knowing that the original version of Tomb Raider was also ported onto Android. Priced at just over a dollar on Google Play, the game is far from unanimous with players, since some criticize its touch screen commands. True enough, the difference in controllers is significant, and the game has a steep learning curve since no remastering was really done.

However, once you’ve got a hand of it, it turns out to be an excellent action-adventure game, with totally reworked HD quality graphics. For a little more than a dollar, the only thing I can suggest is that you buy it. Additionally, if you finish the game too quickly, Tomb Raider 2 is also available on Android.

  • App version: 1.0.39
  • App size: 320.2 MB
  • App compatibility: Android 4.0 or higher

Final Fantasy IX: a legendary adventure in 3D

Square Enix ported many licensed titles over to Android; which includes the excellent third installment, and even Final Fantasy VII. However, it was the last installment of the series, Final Fantasy IX, that attracted me the most.

Looking at gameplay, the adaptation to touch screen is smooth and pleasant. The graphics definitely benefited from a restoration of optimized textures, effects, and shadows for high definition screens. For Final Fantasy IX, Square Enix finally delivered a remastered version that was ported. The game relies on a very useful and automatic backup system that’s activated with every screen change. As always, the prices for Final Fantasy are at the very limit of what’s considered acceptable, but for any true self-respecting fan, it’s a must have for $20.

The Bard’s Tale: a crazy journey into a fantastic universe

The Bard’s Tale is set in a medieval-fantasy universe where goblins reign supreme, and you play as a bard – who’s slightly crazy on the edges – who goes in search of gold pieces and cleavage. The title includes three volumes (1: Tales of the Unknown, 2: The Destiny Knight, and 3: Thief of Fate).

Humor, no glitches, a good adaptation of a PC game, old school graphics, songs that’ll make you die of laughter, what better to ask for? What’s more, the price is way more affordable than Final Fantasy!

  • App version: 1.6.8
  • App Size: 28.8 MB
  • App compatibility: Android 2.3 or higher

The Wolf Among us: the adventure game using point and click

Telltale Games, creators of The Walking Dead, are also the original creators of The Wolf Among Us on Android. This is a point and click adventure game, composed of several chapters where you must make important decisions that will decide the next step of the adventure.

It’s not necessarily the kind of game that I prefer, but it’s worth recognizing that The Wolf Among us is very well made. The atmosphere is tense and it’s particularly violent, while bringing back the traits of a dark thriller. The good news is it’s possible to play and understand the game without having read the books beforehand. The bad news is the game’s entirely in English.

  • App version: 1.21
  • App size: 722.7 MB
  • App compatibility: Android 2.3.3 or higher
